A few months ago, we got a new flock of chickens. You might remember Abby setting up the chicken cam so that we could keep an eye on them. At that time, they were just a few days old and so tiny, but wow, have they gotten big very quickly! They merged with our four old biddies really well, and we now have one happy flock. They have taken to trying to get out of the chicken run, so it is probably time to clip some flight feathers, but I think their fear of Pearl is helping to keep them contained.
As the chickens continue to get older, we’re starting to be able to name them. As chicks, most of them looked identical and so all of the fun names the girls came up with couldn’t be assigned. But there was one chicken who stood out. And she got the name Henson Boone. From the start, she was the one with a little flair. When we had all the chicks together, she was the only one with enough of a color difference to make her identifiable. If you are at all familiar with Benson Boone, the singer, he is also a performer with a little flair. He’s known for his curly mullet, 1970s mustache, classic baby blue jumpsuit, and ability to do flips (he is a former competitive diver). His current songs that you might hear on the radio are Mr. Electric Blue, Beautiful Things, and Sorry, I’m Here for Someone Else. He also recently covered Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody at Coachella.
We listen to a lot of Benson Boone in our household. But the funniest thing about having named that first identifiable chicken Henson Boone is that she is definitely a chicken with some flair. Of all the chickens, she is the only one with this hilarious mop of feathers on top of her head, and somehow it makes her name really fit. All of the chicks have started a summertime molt, so we feel like they will be getting their adult coloring soon and hopefully we can give all of them the fun names we have planned. But for now, we’re content to watch our little superstar and can’t wait for her to start laying eggs!

And speaking of Benson Boone, he is coming to town in September. Not only that, but our household’s biggest Benson Boone fan is having a birthday next week. She also reads or listens to the newsletter each week. Or at least she says she does. Here is her test: we’ve got tickets for the concert! Happy Birthday, Maddy Moo, we’ll keep belting out Benson Boone at home and can’t wait to go see him in concert with you.

And if Benson Boone isn’t your thing, no worries. I’m sorry that our chicken names are limited to current pop stars in this particular batch. Maybe next time I’ll get the girls to go with some classics like Yolko Ono, Audrey Henburn, or Gwyneth Poultry. Anyways, I promise you won’t hear any Benson Boone at the nursery this weekend, so come on out and find something beautiful for your garden. I’m sure most of your plants and flowers are enjoying the soaking rains we’ve had recently. Mother Nature knows how to make sure your plants can take the heat!
