Two Cassette Tapes (Mixtapes) with the words "For You" and "My Love" on Them, Plus the Tape Pulled Out and Shaped Like a Heart on Each

I had to explain to the girls this week what a mixtape is. Apparently one of Abby’s friends was given a mixtape as part of a homecoming dance proposal. (Yes, apparently you have to make a whole thing about asking someone to homecoming now.) Abby was joking that her friend didn’t have a cassette player (is it sad that my car is old enough to have one??) but her friend was also given a Spotify playlist as well.

And then Abby said, “Which ones are tapes, are they like the rectangle with the two holes, or is that a video tape?” and then we had to explain what a cassette even looked like, and you could just tell she had no idea what a mixtape was.

Do you remember those days? When you couldn’t just listen to whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted, wherever you wanted? I remember when a new song would come out, we’d put a blank cassette into the player and just wait and wait for the song to come on the radio. Then we’d hit “Record” as fast as we could and hope that we got most of the song on the tape. Or if you were lucky enough to have a double tape deck, you could record your favorite mix, one song at a time. No drag and drop for sure.

Sometimes I wish I had some of my old mixes. I feel that to listen to them now would really take me on a walk down memory lane! So much work went into making the perfect mixtape for someone you were interested in or dating, for a trip you were taking with friends, or just something that fit a particular mood at a particular place in life.

Finding the perfect songs, especially if you were trying to get them from the radio, keeping up with where on the cassette tape you were, and not recording over something else that you wanted to have! That was work. But somehow, I think it made listening to those songs that much sweeter. A labor of love that you got to enjoy.

Nowadays, we have it so much easier. Open up Pandora or Spotify, put in an artist, and a playlist is created for us. Or with a simple drag and drop, we can create lists of our own. But it does leave more time for getting out in the garden and having fun (with music playing of course!).

As we roll through October, make sure you’ve got your veggies planted. We’ve got a full stock of organic veggies, and we got a shipment of Everbearing Strawberries this week, too. And we’re already thinking about our November events as well. Yoga in the Garden is coming up fast on November 1st, and on that Saturday you’ll find a Spellbound Sourdough pop-up with delectable sourdough treats for sale and Quail Run Coffee with iced or hot coffee (I’ve heard tell of a cold front coming around the 1st). And then on November 8th, we’re hosting a seminar on Herb Gardening to get you into some of the holiday spirit. After all there are only 5 weeks until Thanksgiving and 9 weeks until Christmas! So grab your Walkman, throw in your favorite mixtape, and jam on over to Kerby’s for some fun in the garden.

Happy Gardening,
