I’ve become convinced that no matter how sophisticated we think we’ve become, we’re all still five years old when it comes to shiny rocks.
You can hand an adult a diamond ring, and they’ll admire it. Hand that same person an unusual rock with bands of color running through it that they found themselves, and they’ll probably carry it around all day showing everyone they meet.
Years ago, we took my daughter to Magic Kingdom. At the end of the day came the big decision: one souvenir.
The options seemed endless. There were princess dresses, stuffed Mickeys, pirate swords, hats, shirts, toys, and enough blinking lights to power a small city. She wandered through it all with the seriousness of someone making one of life’s great decisions.
Then she stopped.
In a corner sat a display of polished stones.
For what felt like an eternity, she picked one up. Put it down. Compared another. Held one to the light. Turned another over in her tiny hands. Finally, after much deliberation, she found it.
The perfect little rock.
Not because it was expensive. Not because it was rare. Because to her, it was beautiful.
I still remember the smile on her face as she carried that little treasure home with her. It reminded me that children don’t need much. Wonder comes pretty easily when you’re willing to look for it.
The funny thing is, I don’t think that part of us ever disappears. We just bury it beneath meetings, errands, mortgages, and grocery lists.
This weekend, we’re giving everyone permission to dig it back up.
Join us, rain or shine, for the Grand Opening of Kerby’s Treasure Tower. Mine for fossils, arrowheads, crystals, gemstones, and other hidden treasures. Six lucky miners will even uncover a special token worth a $50 Kerby’s Gift Card.

Come spend a little time outside. Get your hands dirty. Find something that makes you smile.
That little kid who thought a beautiful rock was the greatest treasure in the world? They’re still inside you somewhere. We’ll be right there with you, looking for ours.
