Stone with Abby's hand and footprints in 2011

A Delightful Discovery

Do you have an area in your yard where old pots, plants, and projects accumulate? We do, and for some reason it was right outside our pool screen. Part old herb garden and part dumping ground, Kim and I finally made some time this week to clean it up. We were baffled by the number of old pots we had just laying around, saddened by some of the plants we let decline, and then we made an even more fun discovery: the old stones pictured below. When Abby was 1, we decided we wanted to capture her handprints. Then every year in May, Kim would remind me to get concrete, and we’d track down some old bricks and set out to get Abby’s and then Abby and Maddy’s hand and footprints. Not super easy with a squirming infant, but we managed to get the imprints. Currently they are mostly filled with dirt and gunk, but what a delightful discovery of lots of great memories.

And it was a serendipitous find because, as you know, this summer we gained a ten-ager when Maddy turned 10. But now, with Abby’s birthday this week, there is a real teenager in the house. A bona-fide thirteen-year-old. It is a little hard to fathom how so many years have raced by. It feels like it was just yesterday that I was writing a newsletter to announce her birth. And now she is quickly on her way to becoming a young adult. And of course, her hands and feet are way larger than the prints that we have. Even the ones we put down at the Farmhouse in 2021 are not reflective of their owners anymore, as Abby has started to raid Kim’s closet for shoes (and vice versa). All I know is I wish I could make time slow down! It’s going way too fast.

f you want to see Abby and Maddy in person, they’ll be helping me this weekend at our final seminar of the fall season on Herb Gardening. As we cruise into the holidays, I know you are getting out your favorite family recipes. Why not make them extra special with fresh herbs from your backyard? I’ll show you how. Come out and join me at 10 am.

And even though that is the last seminar, we’ve still got some fun holiday activities for you. On November 18th, we’re hosting two Flower Arranging Make and Takes to help you create a beautiful centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table. One is at 10 am, and the other is at 1 pm. You can get tickets for the workshops at shop.kerbysnursery.com.
