Florida Native Plants
Florida Natives: What and Why?
What exactly is a Florida Native Plant? According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, “A native plant is defined as a plant species that is presumed to have been present in Florida before Europeans arrived.”1
Why are Florida Natives important? They offer food and habitat for wildlife and encourage biodiversity. Biodiversity, in turn, provides humans with food and medicine, cleans our water and air, prevents flooding, and more. Because native plants tend to be low maintenance, they save time and money. Everything we depend on in our daily lives originates from Mother Earth’s supplies, so native plants shouldn’t be taken for granted.
At Kerby’s Nursery, we are proud to offer Florida Native Plants, and we are working to grow this selection. We are also participating in the Homegrown National Park® project by dedicating a plot of our nursery to the planting and nurturing of native plants. You can find out more about this movement on our Value in Growing Natives page.
You, too, can join in by creating your own piece of native paradise in your garden!
