Every year as Mother’s Day approaches, I find myself looking through old pictures and, of course, it takes me down a rabbit-hole of memories. And as you can probably imagine, given where I’ve ended up in my life, there are plenty of pictures of my mom and me, side by side in the garden.
One of my favorites is me and Mom in the middle of the vegetable garden, looking for things to harvest. I think I’m holding a zucchini or a cucumber. Since back in the 80s you didn’t take pictures in quite the same way as we do with our phones today, I feel lucky that I have visual proof of the memories I have in my head of us together in the garden. If she hadn’t helped instill a love of being outside, being in the garden, and watching things grow, well, I guess there is no telling what I’d be doing, but it probably wouldn’t be running a garden center!

Even luckier? I still get to make memories with Mom in the garden. She’ll stop by the Nursery occasionally to pick up some new flowers, and just last week I was digging a stump out of her yard, making room for a new gardening project she was working on. Our memories together in the garden stretch back decades. I am definitely a lucky son!

In a world that moves fast and changes constantly, there’s something grounding about that. Plants grow, seasons come and go, but connection remains – rooted deeply, just like the gardens we’ve built together.
This Mother’s Day, I’m reminded that the best gifts aren’t always things. Sometimes, they’re shared moments, a little dirt under your nails, and memories that keep blooming year after year.

If you want to make some of those memories with Mom or other special women in your life, we have some options starting tonight. From 5 – 7 pm, enjoy a tasty mocktail at our Mother’s Day Sip & Shop where you can stroll through the Nursery and linger over nature’s beauty. While you’re here, shower her with more love by getting her a thoughtful garden gift or houseplant. You can also attend the Singing Bowls Meditation session at 6 pm tonight for a restorative time surrounded by lush foliage (tickets available here). This Saturday, another experience waits for mothers who love herbs in their cooking: our Savory Herb Gardening Seminar. Bring Mom to learn our tips for growing herbs and create a garden that will provide future special moments together with delicious dishes.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, mother figures, and special women in our lives. We are grateful for you.
