Every once in a while, you realize you have completely run out of gas. Monday, I was supposed to stop and fill up my car on the way home from work, but that completely slipped my mind. Then I figured I’d just do it after a drive into Tampa. After all, the dash gauge said I had enough miles left on this tank.
Abby was driving us back from Tampa, and at some point, she reminded me that we needed to get gas. I had forgotten again, and this time we were down to less than 10 miles left. No problem, there was an easily accessible station on our way home. And then she drove right past the gas station. I’m not sure what deep discussion we were in when we both completely spaced as we blew past the station. Now we’re sitting at 3 miles worth of gas left but a little quick math tells me we can make it home and I’ll grab gas on the way into the nursery.
Fortunately, this isn’t a story about being stranded on the roadside, but as we drifted into the driveway, I looked down at the dashboard and saw 0.

No miles left. We were 100% running on empty. I wonder if they really make the computer pad that number a little. I’m not sure I’m willing to find out, but it reminded me of an old Seinfeld episode where Kramer gets a car salesman to ride with him and run the car down to empty.
Abby and I chose not to test the theory, but it got me thinking. We obviously should have stopped for gas way before the mileage hit zero. There are gas stations all over the place. But whether it is a car or us, we often find ourselves running on empty and using every last ounce of gas in the tank.
So, as you approach this week, be sure that you fill up your tank and that you aren’t running on empty. Don’t let that gauge hit zero miles! To help you out, we’ve got a nursery filled with gorgeous fall inspiration including our pumpkin patch, pumpkin wall, scarecrow scavenger hunt and hay maze. And this Saturday at 10am, we’ve got Yoga in the Garden with Kristen from Keystone Yoga. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy the beauty of fall and make sure that your tank is filled and ready for whatever comes next.
