Wash It, Gas It, and Give Me the Keys

There are some phrases that just get stuck in your head. Years ago, Kim and I were watching David Letterman when he said, “Wash it, gas it, and give me the keys.” It was one of those quick little Letterman moments like he was trying out a little bit. Then he made some sort of comment about how people would still be saying that phrase decades later.

Well, I don’t know about people saying it, but somehow, that little line lodged itself in our brains. And every once in a while, completely out of nowhere, one of us will say it.

“Wash it, gas it, and give me the keys.”

It has become one of those strange little pieces of family shorthand that doesn’t really need an explanation. Kim and I know exactly what it means, even when other people are looking at us like we are nuts.

Most recently, it came up around a car. I don’t even remember if it was when we got a new car or when Abby was helping a friend with a car. Either way, suddenly there it was again.

Wash it. Gas it. Give me the keys.

A line from an old late-night TV show that was never intended to be funny for more than a few seconds. And decades later, Kim and I are still saying it. I guess Letterman knew what he was talking about. Some things just stick.

And as we change seasons from Halloween into the holidays and start thinking of Thanksgiving and Christmas, it feels like the perfect time to say it: Wash it. Gas it. And give me the keys. Jump in the driver’s seat and hit the gas on this amazing time of year. Whether you like it or not, we are about to round out 2026. The calendar says so, and so do the plants arriving at the nursery!

You can say that phrase and conjure up images of moving quickly, getting started, but sometimes what comes into my mind is the idea of being prepared. Having things in order, ready to get in the driver’s seat. And one way to do that for yourself is to invest some time in you. We’ve got the perfect way for you to enter the holiday season ready to go. This Saturday at 10am, Kristen from Keystone Yoga will be leading Yoga with Gratitude. Yoga lets us stretch our bodies for physical preparation and focus our minds for mental preparation. Both are important as we enter a busy and sometimes stressful time of the year.

We hope to see you this Saturday to practice yoga, to focus on gratitude and to just enjoy the beauty of November in Florida. Wash it, gas it, and give me the keys!
