Bananas are one of my favorite breakfast staples. They’re nutritious, delicious, and the perfect source of quick natural energy before an early morning workout. Almost every day, I grab one on my way out the door, whether I’m headed to yoga class or into Tampa to row. It’s become such a routine that I hardly even think about it anymore.
One morning, though, my usual breakfast plan hit an unexpected obstacle. As I reached for the bunch of bananas sitting on the kitchen counter, I noticed a bright yellow Post-it note stuck right across them that said: “Do Not Eat. I’m Making Banana Bread.”
Apparently, the bananas had been officially reserved.
Now, under normal circumstances, I probably should have respected the note. But I was hungry, running late, and really craving my usual morning boost. Besides, I figured there were still plenty of bananas left. Since technically they are my bananas, I peeled the note off, grabbed one, and headed out the door feeling completely justified in my decision.
Unfortunately, I learned later that my breakfast choice had serious consequences.
When the girls went to make banana bread later that morning, they discovered there weren’t enough bananas left for the recipe. Their highly anticipated breakfast plans were thwarted. All because I couldn’t resist one banana before rowing. I definitely heard about it afterward.
What started as a minor kitchen disagreement quickly turned into an ongoing family joke. Now whenever the banana supply starts getting low, the Post-it notes come back out. Sometimes Abby claims the bananas first, but other times I beat her to it by posting my own note: “Do NOT make banana bread. I am going to eat these.”

Actually, we’ve solved the problem by buying a few more bananas. That doesn’t stop us from sticking the Post-it notes on sometimes, though. An even better way to solve this would be to plant banana trees in our yard! Currently we have four different types of bananas at the Nursery, including the Chiquita and Ice Cream. Yum. See our post about bananas and then come shop fruit trees, flowers, and more at Kerby’s as we roll right along into summer and start enjoying some much-needed rain.
