Snake in Tray

Snakes and Sweat

Click to Listen Button

The other night a friend sent a picture and said he had broken a sweat. It was a picture of an empty tray of plants and a garden area where they were being planted. I chuckled a little because it was just a few small plants. Really, I thought, that made you break a sweat? I sent a picture back of what I was in the middle of, which was an uphill training walk on a treadmill, in preparation for an upcoming hike. I was sweating for real. He told me to look at the picture more closely, inside the tray. And there, coiled up in the plant tray was a little oak snake. His sweating had nothing to do with exertion, but with being freaked out by a snake.

How do you feel about snakes? Do they make your heart race and your palms sweat? Or do you think ‘Aww that’s a cute little guy’? You may remember a newsletter from a few years ago where we chronicled Kim’s absolute panic at holding a rather large snake. I’ll admit, I’m a little startled when my hand brushes a snake while planting flowers or cleaning the yard, but other than that they don’t bother me too much.

I’m not the only one that doesn’t mind snakes, because this past Saturday, a little python paid a visit to The Kerby’s Pumpkin Patch. He got his picture taken with the pumpkins and everything. I sent a picture to Kim and my friend, and I think I got both of their heart rates going again.

With no snakes and cool temperatures, the one thing we aren’t doing today is sweating. What an amazing drop in temperatures – cool, crisp, a little taste of fall. And to go with it, we’ve got lots of fall fun in the garden.

This Saturday is our Happy Houseplants Workshop at 10am. Come out to learn all about caring for houseplants. To go with our workshop, through next Wednesday, October 26th, all houseplants are 20% off. Get a great deal on a beautiful plant to bring a little nature into your home.

The Pumpkin Patch was restocked this week with some fun and unusual gourds. Come take a family fall photo at the pumpkin wall and don’t forget to do the Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt.

If you are making garden plans for November, I wanted to tell you about two make-and-take events that we are having. On November 12th, we’ll have a Fall Flower Arranging workshop where flower expert Jo will walk you through creating a beautiful fall arrangement. The fee for this class is $32. Click here for details and to sign up. Then on November 19th, staff member Claire, will lead a book-making workshop. The fee for this class is $42. Click here for details and to sign up.

Enjoy the weather while it lasts and have some fun out in the garden.
