The Best Sandwich Ever

Have you ever had a sandwich that you are sure is the best sandwich ever created in the world? Not just a sandwich. The sandwich.

For me, it was from a little place in Atlanta called Kool Korners, just north of the Georgia Tech campus. It wasn’t much to look at. It opened in 1985, and by the time I was in grad school in 2001 its vibe had become a little ‘shabby-chic’. But dilapidated building notwithstanding, at lunchtime every single day there was a line out the door and down the street.

We were regulars. Like almost every single day. Our order never changed: one Cuban sandwich, a bag of garlic Chifles platanitos, and a Guaraná soda. That’s it. No need to study the menu.

The magic happened behind the counter. Freshly roasted, juicy pork, sliced by the patriarch of the family. Piles of melted Swiss added on. Then the rest of the family assembled everything else, pressed the sandwiches until they were hot and crisp, and handed over something that, at least in my memory, remains completely unparalleled.

And yes, I know. I live in Tampa. The home of the Cuban sandwich. We have some serious competition for the best Cuban sandwich right here in our own backyard. But there was just something about that Kool Korners Cuban. Maybe it was the sandwich. Maybe it was the people. Maybe it was standing in the insane line this little shop generated knowing you were about to eat something special.

Since my memory of this sandwich is 25 years old, I figured there was no way I’d find anything online about the shop, but a quick search led me to the Kool Korners webpage! Kool Korners eventually closed its Atlanta location, and moved to Birmingham, Alabama. So now, I may have a road trip in my future, to see if the current sandwich lives up to my memory of it.

But now I’m curious: What’s the best sandwich you’ve ever had?

Not the fanciest. Not the most expensive. The one you still remember, even decades later.

OK. Enough memory lane about sandwiches. Although all this talk of food might just give you a hefty appetite for growing a fall veggie garden. And this weekend gets it all started with our Garden Hoedown. We’re lucky here in Florida. As friends up north start to pack away garden tools for the cooler months, we get to plant a second season of veggies. So come out on Saturday at 10am for the Fall Veggie Gardening seminar where I’ll teach you everything you need to know about growing veggies in Florida throughout the fall and winter. Veggie plants have arrived, and the first hints of fall are making their way into the garden center. So, fuel up on your favorite sandwich and then come out and get fall started with an amazing veggie garden.
